The Solitary Farmer

The Solitary Farmer

bought semen from the catalogue

with colored pictures of sires—sturdy,

promising, like portraits

of Harvard men at the sperm bank.

He was most formal, wouldn’t talk

of inserting the insemination rod,

delivering the goods to the cow.

The farmer never married.

People wondered if he thought

the real act would be a disappointment.
